In recent years, tourism has changed. No longer do visitors search out only the most well-known attractions and conventional destinations. Many travellers want to find off-the-beaten-path places, different cultures and experiences. What has become known as "community-based tourism" marked a turing point. By making inroads into smaller communities, it has opened up new horizons for travellers to explore.

Forty-eight communities, with distinctive lifestyles, spanning the entire country, have been selects for this book, In total, there are 7 villages in the north, 16 in the central region, 15 in the northeast, 8 from the south and a pair of destinations in Bangkok. So visitors can choose from an array of experiences, in an assortment of small communities, to satisfy their wanderlust in a way that combines travel with learning.
