Ayutthaya City of Water

Ayutthaya is closely related to water. It is located where three Rivers meet. These Rivers surrounding Ayutthaya make it an island. In water season, water from the three Rivers would flood Ayutthaya's centre and the surrounding fields. In the past, many canals were dug inside the city centre so as to help drain the flood and to be used as transport routes. There was no draining of flood in the fields outside the city since the annual flood brought along alluvial deposits, which greatly fertilezed the rice fields, thus enabling more crops.
