Few countries conjure up such a sense of mystery and intrigue in the traveller's mind as mountainous, landlocked Laos. Regarded as Southeast Asia's sleepy backwater for many years, it is gradually opening up, revealing to the outside world a beautful country with a fascinating culture and an ethnically diverse population. The capital, Vientiane, bustles with renewed energy but many of Laos' attractions lie beyond the capital. The World Heritage Sites at Luang Prabang and Vat Phou contain magnificent ancient temples, while the mountainous and forested land in the north, home to many hill tribes, attracts trekkers and nature lovers. The mighty Mekong River, flowing through the entire length of the country, has created a unique region known as Si Pan Don, or 4,000 Islands, and offers excellent opportunities for leisurely cruises. Yet despite the gradual modernization, for many in the countryside little has changed, and that is part of Laos' enduring appeal for visitors.
